Why is this research needed?
The purpose of the Life Cycle Atlas is to fill the gap in current research on the education lifecycle of student veterans to provide policy makers, stakeholders, the public, and student veterans with accurate information to make data driven decisions.
This data will unlock never-before-seen insights on career trajectories, skills gaps, geographic trends, and more that will not only help improve SVA's work but also empower all veterans service organizations to improve their programs.
We're looking for responses from all veterans, including current student veterans. This research will help future student veterans learn about the different transition processes helping them to become more informed consumers of their education benefits.

Much of the research on student veterans’ transition from military service to the civilian workforce has focused on specific parts of the transition, such as military to college or college to the workforce, failing to examine the entire educational lifecycle of the student veteran to, through, and beyond college. This lack of information hinders the appropriate development of policies and programs to help support student veterans through their lifecycle and positioning these policies and programs at the correct decision points for maximum benefit. The purpose of this project is to fill the gap in current research on the lifecycle of the student veteran and provide policy makers, stakeholders, the public, and student veterans with information to make data driven decisions.
Student Veterans of America (SVA) has created a web survey to help with this project. The survey questions are similar to questions asked when created social media/networking accounts. Because the everyone’s education lifecycle is unique, the time to complete the survey will vary, but most should complete the survey in less than 10 minutes. You are not required to answer all the questions, and you may withdraw at any time by closing your browser. However, only submitted surveys will be included in the project’s data analysis.
Responses will be confidential and results from this project will be reported at the group level. Several barriers are in place to keep data securely stored. Data will be securely stored using both physical (locks) and electronic barriers (passwords) with access being restricted to SVA personnel directly associated with the project. The survey is using secure http to protect your responses. While we are using the highest level of security available to us, we cannot guarantee complete security from potential data breaches.
Participation is voluntary; SVA chapters or individual student veterans will not be penalized for not participating nor benefit from participating in this project. Your decision or refusal to participate will not be a factor for any chapter funding (e.g. chapter grants) or individual awards (e.g. scholarships). Results from this survey will be used by SVA to inform policy makers, stakeholders, and the public on the different transitions paths veterans take, the key decision points in those paths, and the different outcomes of the paths. Current and future student veterans will benefit by having the ability to explore and see the different paths and decisions past student veterans made and their outcomes. Group results may be presented at conferences, in scholarly articles and media, and as an interactive data visual starting in 2018.
